Why I bought the Ricoh GRiiix

Well, given the name it felt like I was destined to have this camera. However, more practically, I needed a way to make photography a priority in my life. I enjoy looking for small everyday objects or moment to capture, but Im often put off by having to make a mission out of it. And specifically lugging the large Sony around.

I needed a way to have a camera at hand, but that still made it feel more intentional than just using my phone camera. There are people out there taking amazing photos with their phone. I seem to not be one of them.

I was first introduced to the magic of modern compact cameras while on sail week in Greece. One of the photographers had a Fuji x100v, and I immediately fell involve with the concept. I finally understood the style i’ve been seeing all over social media as a result of the jpeg recipes these cameras offered.

I wanted the Fuji, but as it’s quite expensive and almost never in stock I started considering the Ricoh. After seeing the reviews, it was a done deal.

I ordered it and immediately took it for a walk upon receiving it. Naturally I took it everywhere I went. To work, and especially on random outings to Amsterdam.

Below are some of my first images. I mostly use the analog film recipe, although, depending on the conditions it could turn out too red. Still some lessons to be learned in properly using this camera. But that’s the beauty of it. At least I am using it. Multiple times a week.
